This species is endemic to Santa Maria island, Azores (Extent of occurrence = 97 km2). It is widespread on this island, found in several habitat types, and faces no major threats, therefore it is considered as Least Concern (LC).

Napaeus hartungi is very common throughout Santa Maria island, from near the sea to the highest mountain.

Habitat and Ecology

Napaeus hartungi is associated with dry habitats, underneath heaps of rocks and stone walls. It is also found in wooded areas, under decaying logs, the shell frequently covered with mud.
