IUCN SSC Mid-Atlantic Island Invertebrates Specialist Group

Back • Post-Doc Researcher

I am a post-doc researcher at Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (cE3c) where I integrate the Island Biodiversity, Biogeography and Conservation research group (IBBC). I am also vice-president of the Portuguese entomological society (SPEN) https://www.facebook.com/sociedadeportuguesadeentomologia/

I have been involved in the study of experimental evolution in Drosophila species, particularly the ecological and evolutionary mechanisms that constrain outcrossing between closely related species. I have also studied thermal adaptation in closely related Drosophila species. Further, I collaborated in the study of insect-plant interactions and the role of ants as seed dispersers. I have also participated in biodiversity surveys in both Madeira and Azores archipelagos

I have been involved in studies on insect biodiversity, macroecology and conservation in Madeira and mainland Portugal. Presently I am involved in several projects: namely on insect-plant interactions in island ecosystems (http://ce3c.ciencias.ulisboa.pt/research/projects/ver.php?id=63), on the terrestrial arthropod biodiversity in Macaronesia (http://ce3c.ciencias.ulisboa.pt/research/projects/ver.php?id=61). Furthermore In the past two years I’ve been participating in the citizen science project VACA LOURA.pt which aims to raise public awareness for Lucanus cervus an endangered protected species, inviting people to be more involved in its protection in Portugal. http://www.vacaloura.pt/

My current main interests are the study of insect-plant interactions, particularly pollination and seed dispersal, as well as the analysis of biodiversity patterns in island ecosystems. Furthermore, I am also interested on insect conservation and on the impacts and control of invasive species in oceanic islands.
